Habitat

Nature and Agriculture
Until well into the 1970s, the land in the nature reserve was parcelled up into small plots used for agriculture. But farming in the Urdenbacher Kämpe had nearly stopped by the time the NRW-Stiftung and the City of Düsseldorf purchased the land in the 1990s. After that the small parcels were merged to form bigger ones, and fences and watering troughs were set up to make the land attractive for use as pasture. Today the Haus Bürgel Eco Centre coordinates a traditional multiple-use scheme: local farmers let their cattle and sheep graze in the meadow orchards, a beekeeper has set up his hives, and the eco centre cares for the fruit trees and harvests the fruit.
